We Love Roswell!

This will be a very short post because there's not much to report. After leaving Oklahoma we drove to Amarillo then took Hwy 60 to Clovis, NM where we switched to Hwy 70. If you've been following my blog, you've seen most of the sights along with us as we traveled this route a few times before. We drove about 375 miles today but with no wind or traffic it was an easier day than yesterday!

The next three photos were taken along I-40 in Texas, east of Amarillo. There is a stretch there of many intermittent shallow canyons like these. I'm sharing these as an example of why we LOVE traveling in our motorhome. If you were cruising along here in a passenger vehicle, you would not even be able to see these gorgeous scenes because the road sides are somewhat sloped.

We stopped for lunch at a McDonald's in aptly named Hereford, TX. Here are a couple of photos of the massive cattle feed lots in this area. If you've never seen them, it's quite a sight. We must have seen tens of thousands of cattle today...millions of burgers on hoof. Does anyone know why some of them stand on top of these small man-made hills in the pasture?

Ten to twenty minutes out of Roswell, NM we finally saw this...a mountain to the front of us and those plateaus/mesas to the right! Yeah, we are in the southwest!

We are both excited about visiting our favorite small Museum of Modern Art here in Roswell tomorrow!

"Old" Friends, Short Days

I had such a great time last night that I forgot to blog!

Yesterday was a short driving day, we only went from Springfield, MO to Tulsa, OK where we dry-camped at the Hard Rock Casino.

We especially wanted to stop here this trip because our friends, Dianne & Mike, from our neighborhood in California have moved here. They met us for dinner at the buffet in the casino and we spent a fabulous four hours catching up on each others' lives.

As the four of us walked through the casino on our way out, we each gambled a bit. I put $20.00 in a slot and cashed out at $32.75. That may not sound like much to you but where else can you get a 63.75% return on your money in about fifteen minutes? Dianne didn't do quite as well; she put $1.00 in a slot machine and cashed out at $1.40...but still, that's a 40% return! The guys, well neither of them had a ticket to cash out...giggle!

This morning we left Tulsa at 9:00 planning to drive to Amarillo, TX. Here is the Arkansas River which runs through Tulsa.

Bella was feeling well enough to keep an eye on the road for Rich!

There are some beautiful scenes along I-44 in OK!

Check out the tree, not the bug splattered windshield in this shot. The cross winds were strong which makes driving a rig pretty exhausting. When we stopped for gas, we decided that there is no reason to push it so we are spending the night at the Elk City/Clinton, OK KOA. The winds died down late this afternoon.

For Dora it was just another boring day on the road. She was keeping an eye on me because she must have known that they gave me dog biscuits when I checked in here at the KOA.

Bella though was tired and took a nap soon after we arrived. All that co-piloting is hard work!

Right after we pulled in, I got a delightful surprise...my friend since grade school, Sandee, called! We don't often call each other so it was a treat chatting with her. It must be old friends week here on the road...check in please!

Springfield to Springfield...

...Illinois to Missouri that is! On the tenth day after leaving home, seven days after Bella got sick, and five days post-surgery we have continued on to the southwest. Here's a brief recap of our first glorious day on the road.

Golden soybean fields just south of Springfield, IL

Pure luck both times, on a previous trip too, I have caught this shot of the Gateway Arch in the background of a rail yard. We take I-255 to the south around St. Louis.

Mere moments later I was able to get this shot of St. Louis.

Crossing the Mississippi River on I-255 over the Jefferson Barracks Bridge.

Couldn't resist shooting this shortly after we transitioned from I-255 to I-44. Now that's some BOURBON!

Missouri is an incredibly beautiful state, even from the interstate!

The KOA office in Springfield, MO. They would deliver piping hot, homemade pizza to our RV so we didn't even unhook the car tonight. It was good pizza too!

Just look at Princess Bella. She struggled to do it but finally succeeded in balancing herself comfortably on top of two couch pillows while Dora had none. I fear there's a sense of entitlement brewing after all the attention and special foods being provided our surgical patient. Seriously though, we had a great day of travel and she seems to be doing very well.

Yesterday we had seen Bella's vet for the final visit which was bittersweet because she saved Bella's life and is such a sweet person too. Last evening we drove into Virden to meet Uncle Don, Aunt Audrey, Betty and her adorable grandson, Carter, and Wayne & Mary for dinner since we were confident we would be leaving today. Here are a few shots...

Kudos to WalMart!

We needed a few things from the store this morning so I drove into town and shopped at WalMart on Sixth St. Keep in mind that on our travels we stop to shop, and occasionally sleep, at many WalMarts; I'd venture to say we've probably visited 100 stores. The exteriors of the newer stores are quite varied. This is absolutely the most amazing WalMart exterior I have ever seen.

This is the front center of the store. It is a tribute to the fact that Springfield was Lincoln's home, he was laid to rest here, it is the home of the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and that Illinois is the Land of Lincoln.

The panel on the left is inscribed with the Lincoln quote, "I DO NOT THINK MUCH OF A MAN WHO IS NO WISER TODAY THAN HE WAS YESTERDAY."

The panel on the right is inscribed with the Lincoln quote, "PEOPLE ARE JUST AS HAPPY AS THEY MAKE THEIR MINDS UP TO BE."

My mom was a WalMart Associate for just over twenty years. Like most of her era, she was so proud to be a part of that great enterprise. When they built the new store in Carlinville, just a few years ago, she was so disappointed because it was so plain, inside and out. I know that Wayne & Mary have taken her to this Springfield store but I don't know that she was still able to appreciate what WalMart did here by then.

Bella Is Home!

I just couldn't blog last night; for one thing I am reading a good book but more importantly I was exhausted. This week has been so stressful for us that when Bella came home yesterday all the oomph just left me.

Yes! Bella came home yesterday afternoon! After meeting with us and explaining all the meds, answering our many questions, and reviewing her food schedule, Dr. Helgen brought Bella to us.

As soon as we got home, she curled up in a favorite spot under the table. Notice:  there is no longer a rug under the table where we can't keep an eye on her!

For the first few days, Bella is on a prescription diet that is easily digestible. Last evening Rich would feed her from his fingers to get her to eat.

Were you wondering where Dora was while Bella was getting all this special attention? Not far from the action.

Aaawww...Bella was lying here after eating and Dora walked past her, then backed in, to lie close to her.

This afternoon we were back at the clinic for a scheduled check of her temperature/pulse/respiration. She trotted into the clinic like she was going to see her best friend...well, one could say that Dr. Helgen is her savior. The doctor was thrilled to hear that she eagerly ate her pills embedded in food from a dish this morning and went to the bathroom. TMI? Oh well.

Just a bit ago, Rich was two-fisted feeding both of them. They are both going to be even more spoiled but we are so happy to report that it appears Bella will recover completely!

Tomorrow morning we return to the clinic for a more complete checkup and the doctor expects that she will give us the all clear at that time. If so, we will be back on the road Saturday morning. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Here's Dora!

We have not forgotten Dora in all the hubbub surrounding Bella's crisis. She was one of the many considerations when we decided to move our RV from W&M's to Springfield; she's not alone as much as she would be if we were driving back and forth two or three times a day.

After transporting Bella from one clinic to the other this evening, Rich and I went shopping for a new toy to bring for Dora. Here she is running and fetching and trying to chew out the squeakers which is her favorite thing to do with squeaky toys.

Shaking it

Squeaking it

Fetching it...

Fetching it again...and again and again!

Guarding it, like the treasure it is!

Bella Update

Again this morning at 7:30 we were at the overnight emergency clinic to pick Bella up and transport her to the Capitol Illini Vet Clinic. She was very groggy but could stand and walked a few steps when they took her out of the kennel where she spent the night.

This is Dr. Helgen, Bella's surgeon. She was just about as thrilled to see Bella this morning as were we!

The surgery was so extensive that another surgeon, from their Chatham clinic, also came and scrubbed in because it took two surgeons working together to get all the foreign materials safely out of her. Dr. Helgen brought in a large zip-loc style bag containing all the 'stuff' that was removed from Bella's stomach, intestines, and colon during surgery. Well of course I took a photo but it's too gross to post. What was most shocking was that there was at least 8 inches of leash in one piece in addition to rug strands, blue bone shards, a couple of small pieces of leash, and heaven knows what else some of that was.

Looking back at yesterday's post, I realized that I should have mentioned how relieved we are that a year and a half ago we had all the carpet removed from our RV and laminate flooring laid throughout. Just thought I would mention that in case any of my dear readers were thinking the worst. Our floors are scrubbable and boy did they ever get scrubbed...over and over again!

By this evening when we visited, she had sips of water today that stayed down but still refused to eat. Those who know her realize she's not herself! We moved her back to the overnight emergency clinic again so that she can continue to be IV hydrated and we'll take her back to Capitol Illini again in the morning.

A Dramatic Change of Plans

When we left home on Thursday we planned to spend three nights in Carlinville visiting with family and friends before heading southwest for the winter. We park at my brother and SIL's so we get to spend good times with them and get spoiled with all the great meals she makes for us.

On Friday we met my high school BFF, Dorothy, for lunch at Taylor's Mexican Chili Parlor on the square. If you are ever in Carlinville, treat yourself to one great, unique, original chili. That chili has been served in several different locations in Carlinville under a couple of different owners since 1904, but the recipe remains the same.

Rich went back to the RV, Dorothy and I took a ride out to the Mayfield Memorial Park Cemetery. What? You and your best friends don't cruise cemeteries while you catch up on each other's lives?

The truth is that it had been quite a while since I had been to this cemetery and only learned the day before that her folks are buried catty-cornered across the lane from my paternal grandparents.

On Saturday, we met an old friend of mine for lunch at Doc's in Girard. I have known Joan for many years and we have quite an interesting history, but we don't get to see each other as often as I would like.

Doc's is an old time pharmacy which was established in 1884; it was owned and operated by three generations of the Deck family for 117 consecutive years before the last Deck brothers retired. In 2007 new owners bought the building. The original 1929 soda fountain and a new grill provide local residents and Route 66 travelers a place to gather. It also houses a museum displaying many antiques and artifacts from its many years as a pharmacy owned by the Deck family. Rich was excited about one antique in particular...it is a machine that physicians used to "revitalize" a patient with electric shock. Guess who Rich thought it would be fun to test it on!

After lunch we went to Joan's house to continue our visit then Rich and I drove out to Union Chapel Cemetery where our lot is and where my folks and many other family members are buried.

From there we drove up to Virden to meet my cousin, Betty, Aunt Audrey, and Uncle Don for dinner at Di Carlos.

Here are Rich and my cousin, Kathy. Wayne and Mary were there too but I didn't get a good enough photo of them to post. They will be thrilled about that, since they are extremely camera shy! There are some great places to eat in these small central Illinois towns.

When we got back to the RV after dinner, our world was thrown into turmoil. Bella had been sick and vomited all over the floor of the RV. We knew she had been stressed and had munched on a rug but she has done that before and it just passes through...not this time. She continued to be sick throughout the night so we took turns staying up so that one of us would be with her and could clean up after her at all times.

Sunday morning Wayne drove Rich and Bella to the emergency animal clinic in Springfield. They discovered that she had a severe case of pancreatitus and intestinal blockage. She was also dehydrated by then so they put her on an IV hoping that fluids would result in the movement of the rug fibers.

This morning we had to be in Springfield by 7:30 to move her from the emergency off hours clinic to a regular day hours clinic. After more x-rays and an ultra sound it was clear that she needed surgery. She went a little later than the 2:00 scheduled time and they were just closing her up in surgery at 7:00. We are still waiting for the veterinarian to call but the nurse called then saying that Bella will be fine but there was a lot of rug in her intestines.

She will be moved to the off hours clinic yet tonight and we will have to pick her up there again at 7:00 in the morning and transfer her to the clinic where she had the surgery. She will remain at the day hours clinic until late tomorrow and then will have to return for checkups.

We decided this afternoon that we needed to be closer to her veterinarians and clinics so we drove back to Carlinville, touched base with Wayne and Mary, and moved the RV to a park just south of Springfield.

This may delay our travels to AZ for a week or so but that's okay. Right now we are so relieved that she will be okay...so joyously relieved.

Lovin' Life ~~ Thankfully

Update: Just as I was ready to publish this post, the surgeon finally called. They managed to save her life by removing lots of rug fibers and 40 centimeters of her small intestine then re-sectioning it. Her stomach, intestines, and colon contained strands of rug. This is not the first time that she has eaten rugs, Dora has too, but they have always been able to pass it. It will be a challenge to keep her from ever doing that again. Tonight Bella is in fair condition and will be closely monitored for three to five days before they know for certain that she will be okay.
