Morton Arboretum in the Fall

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

The Arboretum is a favorite place for all of us and we rarely miss going there when the kids are here. It is especially gorgeous on a sunny fall day.

After we viewed the display of blown glass pumpkins, which was a surprise for the kids that was perfectly timed to add yet another installment to our "glass" stories, they and Grandpa explored the Maze Garden, a one acre maze of hedges.

At one side there is a tower overlooking the hedge maze. Rich had climbed up to the platform to watch the kids while I manned the entrance waiting to take photos.

We walked around Meadow Lake to check out all of the scarecrows that were designed and made by local Girl Scout troops. Here are a few favorites:

These next shots of the kids were taken at my favorite spot on Meadow Lake. The scene here is always beautiful.

Not for the first time this fall, a group of turtles caught my eye as they sunned themselves on these last days of warm weather. Two are obvious; can you find the third?

No visit to the Arboretum would be complete without exploring the Children's Garden.

Returning to our van, we had to walk through a tunnel under a highway to the west side of the park. There is an open space between the northbound and southbound lanes of the highway. In this shot, the kids have climbed the tunnel wall and are looking out to the sky between those lanes. Near the end of our third day of non-stop activity, they were still finding creative outlets for their boundless energy.

  1. I always love your pictures from Morton Arboretum. Looks like an awesome place. One day, we will make it there to explore... Maybe we can get there this summer.
