Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse

Considering that we were lazy and got a late start today, we did see some of the island's amazing scenery.

The only active lighthouse on the island is at Bass Harbor so we drove down there to check it out. It is called the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, was built in 1858, and is managed by the Coast Guard. To see the lighthouse you must...

...walk down three flights of steep wooden steps...

...and then walk down this long flight of rocky stone steps.

But the views are well worth it!

This sailboat gliding silently past.

The incredible colors and sizes and shapes of the rocks that protect the shore beneath the lighthouse. To see the lighthouse you must climb down some of these rocks.

Then you cast your gaze upwards and there it is...the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.

The girls were with us, as they often are, so we had to take turns going down to the rocks to see the lighthouse. I had gone first and taken these photos; the girls tried desperately to follow Rich when he went down and were excited to see him coming back up!

  1. Looks like quite a hike that you took here. Those are some STEEP steps! Well worth the adventurous trek though. Like how you caught the light house kind of peeking around the corner.
